In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Republican National Convention, the week in wildlife, Insects and Arthropods, a small kit, a free film simulation script and Howard Bond.

  • The Associated Press recaps the Republican National Convention in pictures. "For Trump, a former reality television star highly attuned to his public image and the visuals he projects, the convention provided a chance to choreograph an entertaining spectacle for his loyal supporters and the voters he's trying to court."
  • Pejman Faratin curates images of the Week in Wildlife from around the world.
  • Jackie Andres features Frank Deschandol's images of The World's Most Elusive Insects and Arthropods. "I'm above all a naturalist who came logically to photography, not the other way around," the French photographer says. "I've always had a strong connection with nature and I couldn't live without traveling and discovering new places."
  • Kirk Tuck is putting together A Small Kit for out-of-town photography. "I have one M Leica that is perfect. It's the M240-MB-E which was a late launched version with an updated buffer, a much better rear screen (actually good enough to judge color on!) and an "Anthracite" finish that looks like industrial steel," he writes. "I have two 50mm lenses and both are excellent. One is the Carl Zeiss 50mm f2.0. The other is the Voigtlander 50mm f2.0 APO lens. While the Zeiss is smaller and a brilliant lens I tend to always reach for the Voigtlander."
  • Sinan Onur Altınuç has posted a free Film Simulation Script written in Python that you can extend with your own custom film profiles by adding to a JSON file that edits the RGB color curves, contrast, saturation, chromatic aberration, blur, base color, grain amount and grain size.
  • Mike Johnston remembers Howard Bond, the large-format photographer, who passed away this week at the age of 93. "I always thought of him as being somewhat like those master guitarists who other guitarists appreciate but who aren't as well known to the wider public," he writes.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
