In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Paris Olympics, Kicken Berlin, The Chelsea, NASA's new camera and simple advice.

  • The Associated Press begins its coverage of the Paris Olympics with Day 1 of competition, before the opening ceremony tomorrow.
  • 50 years | 50 Photographs presents works from the Kicken gallery's half-century history in Aachen, Cologne and Berlin. The exhibit at Kicken Berlin runs until Dec. 20.
  • Suzanne Sease features The Chelsea, the personal project of Cade Martin. "I wasn't planning on it, but the Chelsea was spinning tales that I had to listen to," Martin says of the famed hotel.
  • Kenneth Chang reports The Moon's Most Shadowy Places Can't Hide From NASA's New Camera (gift link). "While the optics of ShadowCam are almost identical to those in the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter's camera, the new instrument takes superlong exposures, increasing sensitivity by a factor of about 200," he writes. "The invisible darkness becomes visible."
  • In Simple Advice for Personal Finance, Jason Kottke shows an image of Harold Pollack's 4x6 index card of how to manage money. Kottke also read a post by Oliver Burkman in which he observes, "Michael Pollan's seven-word guidance -- "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants" -- is probably wiser than all other diets." So we wonder what Simple Advice for Photography might look like.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
