We heard on the radio this morning that Manger Square in Bethlehem was vacant again this year, the festivities suppressed by the ongoing war. Tourism there is also down with access to midnight mass and the site of manger itself easily accessed without the usual crowds.

It took us an extra day this year to print, assemble and scribble illegibly in the 19 Christmas cards we send to distant family and friends, a list that dwindles a bit each year with natural attrition. Our ecard went out to quite a few more with a couple of bounces implying the same sad news.

But the nice thing about the ecards, which are just a JPEG, is that they make it easy for the recipient to reply so we get handfuls of return wishes reminding us we are not forgotten.

It's no doubt easier to list our grievances than to count our blessings but if you examine a grievance for a minute, you find it is often accompanied by a blessing.

We came across some bright red berries washed by the rain when we walked down to the village late one afternoon to do some shopping. We had to rein ourselves in and backtrack to take a shot of them with our phone.

We recognized that blessing when we saw it. It gave us an excuse to wish you all the blessings of the season!
