In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Gaza, Naples, Public Domain Day, Apple Photos privacy, NPR photographers, your goldmine, 2025 by month, new lens sets, Creative January and macOS trends.

  • Kieran Seager portrays Life in a Gaza Field Hospital during three months at the UK-Med field hospital in al-Mawasi, Rafah.
  • Gianni Cipriano documents The Other Naples, Not Seen on Instagram (gift link) with his photographs. "Naples is like a tomb," said one resident. "It's pretty from the outside, but you don't want to see what is inside."
  • Jennifer Jenkins and James Boyle celebrated Public Domain Day yesterday by linking to works from 1929 now available to all, including photographs taken then. "Who knows what this year's newly public domain works might inspire?" they ask.
  • In Apple Photos Phones Home on iOS 18 and macOS 15, Jeff Johnson reports a privacy issue with a new setting enabled by default: Enhanced Visual Search. It silently sends your photo data to Apple.
  • NPR photographers share their favorite Tiny Desk Concert Pictures from 2024 -- and their thoughts about photographing them. Images by Michael Zamora, Zayrha Rodriguez, Elizabeth Gillis, Keren Carrión, Virginia Lozano, Courtney Theophin, Sofia Seidel, Alanté Serene and Grace Widyatmadja are included.
  • Derrick Story ends the year with over 6,000 new photos and Sitting on a Goldmine, he suggests. "My point is, all of us are sitting on a goldmine of wonderful content," he writes. "At a minimum, we should take an hour to go back through our own year in pictures and acknowledge the experiences we've had."
  • In Another Year Over, Mike Johnston goes over 2024 month by month at The Online Photographer.
  • Thom Hogan calculates Photography Gets Costlier in 2025 (even for smartphone users). And in KISS Is Your Friend he suggests some lens buys to experience it.
  • Zach Sutton takes a look at Brandi Nicole's Creative January. "Creative January was born in January 2020, just before Covid shut down the world in March," she says. "It started with my best friend Emily Teague & me wanting to start the new year with an intention to be more creative in the new year, but needing a way to incorporate structure and ensure we follow through with the goal. We love a short challenge and doing something every day (or back then, every other day!) for a month sounded like a doable but still challenging undertaking."
  • Howard Oakley reports How macOS Has Grown 2019-2024 and How macOS Has Become More Private.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
