In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Reuters, Richard Sharum, migrating birds, hallucinating Web sites, social media for photographers and Gen Z's Christmas haul.

  • Reuters showcases 23 Pictures of the Day for Jan. 7.
  • In Traveling Middle America, Grace Ebert reviews Richard Sharum's Spina Americana. "Manual labor is prominent throughout the series, which features migrant workers picking oregano, a firefighter and a cotton candy vendor," she writes.
  • Nurit Katz provides some photographic evidence of why visitors flock to the Getty Center whose planted gardens with water features is a layover spot for migrating birds and a habitat for a variety of native species.
  • The Wild Time of Year, Thom Hogan suggests, is when "no one releases new products for a month." Web sites start hallucinating products like 10 cameras under $500 in which "two of the cameras were well over US$500, two were not really still photography cameras, two were instant cameras, and one was designed for kids. Realistically, the best camera under $500 right now is probably a used model ;~)," he writes.
  • A Reddit poster asks, On What Social Media Not Owned by Meta or Elon Musk Can I Share My Work and See the Work of Others?
  • Casey Lewis details What Gen Z Got for Christmas in 2024. Digital cameras topped the list. "I saw a lot of this $65 Camp Snap digital camera and this $49 Amazon digital point-and-shoot camera -- both pink and teal were popular colorways -- and on the higher end, the $330 Canon Powershot and $750 Sony a6400 were frequently mentioned," she writes.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look five years back. And please support our efforts...
