In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at th Palisades Fire, the Shutterstock-Getty Images merger, the Pebble Flow, Joe McNally and Meta.
- NPR posts dramataic images of the Wind-Fueled Palisades Fire. Even if you're not in the path of the flames, the air is toxic. Reuters add more in Thousands Evacuate as Pacific Palisades Fire Burns Out of Control.
- In A Bold Move in a Shifting Landscape, Paul Melcher reflects on the Shutterstock-Getty Images merger. "This collaboration isn't about fighting for marketshare against each other or anyone else," he writes. "Instead, it's about consolidating resources to tackle the larger challenges posed by generative AI, plummeting prices, shifting market behaviors and disruptive technologies."
- Zara Stone reviews the Pebble Flow, a $135,000 electric RV you can control with an iPad. Photos by Niki Williams.
- Joe McNally discusses Lighting on the Salt Flats at a teching event for the University Photographers' Association of America. "I discussed the notion of letting the dancer just be the dancer and try not to constrain them overmuch," he writes. "I was shooting wide as you can see and her arm drifted a bit into the no fly zone of a Nikkor 14-24mm, but it didn't trouble me overmuch."
- In Meta Is Ushering in a 'World Without Facts', Says Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Maria Ressa reflects on the company's decision to end factchecking on its platforms. "Journalists have a set of standards and ethics," Ressa said. "What Facebook is going to do is get rid of that and then allow lies, anger, fear and hate to infect every single person on the platform."
