In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at World Sports Photography Awards, Letizia Battaglia, Harbin Ice and Snow World, Greenland, 35mm film scanner and the LA fires.

  • The World Sports Photography Awards for 2025 have been announced, along with all the finalists. Categories include American Football, Baseball, Equestrian, Golf, Racquet Sports and Football. More than 2,200 professional sports photographers from over 96 countries around the world submitted more than 13,000 images to this year's competition.
  • Chasing the Mafia presents a few of Letizia Battaglia's photos on display at The Photographer's Gallery in London until Feb. 23. "Riding a Vespa and armed only with her Leica camera, Battaglia scoured the alleys of Palermo, day and night. She was always the first on the scene of a crime, often even before police and relatives."
  • Andy Wong photographs the attractions at the Harbin Ice and Snow World in Harbin, China. "The main festival covers 1.0 square kilometer (0.6 square miles) of the city, with the sculptures using 13,000 cubic meters (460,000 cubic feet) of ice blocks cut mainly from the adjacent Songhua River," he writes. "Ice slides, with the longest ones reaching 521 meters (1,710 feet), are a key attraction, with visitors waiting almost an hour to get their chance."
  • Reuters helpfully presents 25 photos of Greenland. "Greenland may become independent if its residents want, but is unlikely to become a U.S. state, Denmark's foreign minister said on Wednesday after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump refused to rule out force to take control of the Arctic island."
  • A Reddit poster asks for recommendations of a Film Scanner for a 35mm Film. Not surprisingly, the products mentioned are rather mature. The poster, who raised the question because they like shooting film, also wonders, "Also, do I need to chemically process the film before using the scanner?"
  • "While trees and vegetation on the property have burned, Getty structures have been unaffected and thankfully, both staff and the collections are safe," writes Getty President and CEO Katherine E. Fleming about the Palisades Fire burning out of control near the Getty Villa. It's one of several fires in Los Angeles, as the News Hour's Stephanie Sy, who grew up in the area, reported yesterday in Massive Wildfires Continue to Rage Across LA Area, Leaving Neighborhoods in Ruins. Winds gusting to 100 mph have made the situation particularly dangerous.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
