In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at 50 Years Ago, Pictures of the Day, the Year of the Snake, Wim Wenders, Flowers, Lia Darjes, Smithfield Market, Fulvio Bonavia, the Frame tool and Thunderbolt 5 SSDs.
- Alan Taylor features 29 photos in 50 Years Ago in Photos: A Look Back at 1975. "Half a century ago, the Vietnam War came to an end with the fall of Saigon, the blockbuster movie Jaws was released and U.S. President Gerald Ford escaped two assassination attempts," he sets the mood.
- Reuters shares 29 Pictures of the Day to return you to the present.
- Manuela López Restrepo curates a few photos as Celebrations Commence the Year of the Snake. "For many, it's a time to reflect on people they have lost, but it is also a time to set intentions and welcome the new energy of the future," she writes.
- Written Once showcases the images Wim Wenders took on a trip through Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California as he prepared for his 1984 film Paris, Texas.vThe trip resulted in the photo series Written in the West, which was first exhibited in 1986 at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The show at Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York runs until Mar. 15.
- Grace Ebert covers the London exhibition Flowers: Flora in Contemporary Art and Culture that "brings together more than 500 photographs, installations, sculptures, archival pieces and other objects to create a rich landscape spanning millennia." It runs from runs from Feb. 12 to May 5.
- In Plates I-XXXI, Sophie Wright discusses Lia Darjes' theatrical still lifes, which "capture her furry neighbors feasting at her garden dining table at night."
- Kin Cheung captures the Smithfield Market in London before it moves to a new site. "Smithfield, derived from the olde English word for "smooth field" and built just beyond the old Roman wall, became the go-to place for the sale of horses, sheep and cattle late in the 11th century," writes Pan Pylas. "It was a tough place, renowned for drunkenness, general rowdiness and violence, especially around the annual Bartholomew Fair, which ran for seven centuries until it was shut down in 1855 after a bit too much trouble."
- Suzanne Sease features Beauty Interrupted, the personal project of Fulvio Bonavia. "When I returned to my studio in Milan just after lockdown, my aim was to capture the inherently perfect aesthetics of these plants," he writes. "As I was working, my eyes fell on a piece of plastic, which I dropped onto a flower, interrupting its beauty. In a way, this is exactly what is happening to our planet -- the disturbance on nature that can no longer remain hidden."
- Julieanne Kost discussed using the Frame Tool in Photoshop in this 11-minute video:
- Howard Oakley reports Thunderbolt 5 SSDs Are Promising, but Fill Their Cache Quicker. "As the first batches of Thunderbolt 5 SSDs are starting to ship, this is a good time to take stock of what we have seen so far," he writes. "Here I include some current results obtained from testing one of these new products."
