In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the house in the Tenderloin, Mark Laita, Photoshop on iPhone, shooting a wedding, springtime for photographers and the creative spark.

  • Eleni Balakrishnan tells The True San Francisco Story of the Only House in the Tenderloin and the man inside. "Unassuming and almost invisible from the street behind a graffitied privacy fence, both the house and the man in it have lived the ultimate San Francisco story -- of booms and busts, oddity and tragedy," she writes. With photos (including the previous jail cell rooms for Alcatraz afficianados) from various sources.
  • Mee-Lai Stone features Mark Laita's images from Soft White Underbelly, a photo series that "unpicks the complex life stories of those who exist on society's fringe."
  • Terry White calls Photoshop on iPhone A Game-Changer for Mobile Creators. We did install it on our iPhone 15 Pro Max yesterday. Intuitive? Uh, no. But we'll let you know how it goes after we finish his tutorial:

  • In But I'm Not a Wedding Photographer!, Derrick Story suggests a strategy when you suddenly discover you've agreed to do something you aren't prepared to do.
  • Jason Row gets ready for Photography in the Spring with a list of likely subjects. "The real beauty of spring is the fact that you don't need any specific camera gear, such is the abundance of subjects," he writes.
  • In The Last Creative Spark, Paul Melcher asks, "Creativity has always adapted to new technologies, but if the role of human execution is completely removed, what remains of the experience of creating itself?"

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
