In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at re-photography, Carnival, Greenlanders, Beth Galton and favorite normal lenses.
- In 150 Years of Change (gift link), Stanford art historian Kim Beil shows how re-photography of old photos of Utah's Uinta Mountains compared to recent ones with the same view show how much and how quickly ecosystems are changing. "The technique can be more challenging than it sounds," she writes. "Subtle variations in photographic equipment can also make it hard to create matching images as cameras, films and lens sizes change."
- Reuters presents 40 dazzling photos of Carnival in Brazil.
- In Most Greenlanders Are Lutheran written by Luis Andres Henao, Associated Press photographer Emilio Morenatti documents their "rug ged yet vulnerable lifestyle."
- Suzanne Sease spotlights Covid Diary, the personal project of Beth Galton. "I knew that in order to keep safe I wouldn't be able to access my studio, so I brought my camera home and constructed a small set next to a window," Galton begins the story.
- Mike Johnston lists My Favorite Normal Lenses of All Time. Ten of them.
