In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at International Women's Day, AP's week, Bloody Sunday 1965, Can Manap, black-and-white emulsions, filters and Karen Russell.

  • International Women's Day 2025 Image Gallery highlights "a few examples of some of the many people worldwide who commit to help Accelerate Action for gender equality within their own sphere of influence."
  • The Associated Press spotlights its Week in Pictures curated by photo editor Eloy Martin.
  • Brian Ellis-Gibbs looks at the newly-restored photos from 1965 of Bloody Sunday by Spider Martin, including the Two Minute Warning. Martin was the only news photographer to capture Bloody Sunday and the subsequent marches from Selma to Montgomery. Selma Is Now is on display in Montgomery, Ala., until June 1.
  • A Glance at the Sky, shot on iPhone 12 Pro, is Can Manap's best picture. "I chose black and white to emphasize the textures and amplify the composition's strengths and details," he says. "Photography is not merely about seeing but feeling and interpreting. It's about bridging what is visible and what is sensed."
  • Mike Johnston catalogs My History With Films. "Eventually I bit the bullet and surrendered to Tri-X 400, which was what more or less everybody shot in 35mm," he writes. Yep, us too.
  • A Reddit poster wonders about the Price Discrepancy Between Filters. "Glass quality, cut quality, quality of the threads, antiglare coating on the inside and outside," explains the first reply.
  • Scott Simon talks to Karen Russell about her new novel The Antidote and what Gordon Parks had to do with it.

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
