In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Sony World Photography Awards, Maria, Murray Fredericks, photo book services and the blood worm moon.
- The World Photography Organization has announced the open competition winners and shortlist of the Sony World Photography Awards. The Open Photographer of the Year will be revealed on April 16.
- Magali Duzant presents images from Maria Abranches's project Maria, he story of one woman's life during Portuguese colonialism. "In confronting Portugal's past and present, Abranches and Ana Maria have added to the possibility of a more inclusive vision of Portuguese future," she writes.
- A Sculpture Made of Fire is Australian photographer Murray Fredericks's best photograph. He brought the fire.
- Erin Roberts recommends The Best Photo Book Service for The Wirecutter. "fter conducting more than 100 hours of research and testing (which included creating 23 photo books and consulting with a master printer on the results), we recommend Mixbook as the best online photo book service," she writes. She also recommends VistaPrint as a less expensive alternative that "delivers good-enough books at an affordable price."
- Joe Hernandez explains What to Know About This Week's 'Blood Worm Moon' Total Lunar Eclipse. "People on the West Coast will see this week's total lunar eclipse beginning at 11:26 p.m. on Thursday, while those on the East Coast will see it at 2:26 a.m. Friday morning. Totality will last for about 65 minutes," he writes.
