In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the Festival of Colors, Canberra Balloon Spectacular, the Global Ability Photography Challenge, a pole vaulter, three young men, unconventional lenses and a contract.
- Reuters showcases 31 photos of Holi, the Hindu Festival of Colors.
- Lukas Coch photographs the Canberra Balloon Spectacular, which kicked off at 6 a.m. today and runs through March 23.
- Charu Bahri highlights Eight Photography Winners With Disabilities Who Show the World Their Perspective from this year's Global Ability Photography Challenge organized by Youth4Jobs, a nonprofit organization in India working to help people with disabilities including speech and hearing impairments, intellectual disabilities and low vision.
- Peter "Gramps" Dejong captured A Pole Vaulter's Failed Attempt and lived to tell the story. "I picked a spot under the pole vault from where you could see the athletes faces as they arch backward before falling into the mats (cushion) and shot Guttormsen's jump a bit wider," he writes. "He did not clear the height and came crashing down with the bar after letting go of his pole. I decided to shoot it with an 85mm f1.4, lower ISO and higher quality for cropping, gambling on one of the athletes missing the height."
- Spiro Bolos captured Three Young Men in Uniform in Chicago one afternoon with his iPhone 12 Mini. "I'm glad if the military life they've chosen has given them a better opportunity than they might have had in their home towns," he says, "but at the same time, I wonder what challenges may lie in their very near future."
- LensRentals suggests some Unconventional Lenses to Try on Your Next Photoshoot, including tilt-shift, Lensbaby, macro and ultra-wide lenses.
- Rob Haggart prices a contract for Portraits and Still Life Images for a cosmetics company. "The creative brief called for a mix of minimal setups against a white background, along with a few scenarios that involved prop styling and set design," he writes.
