In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Jon Tonks, Toby Binder, an industry problem, #MeToo in photography, SSD issues and AI image generators.
- Photographer Jon Tonks spent 18 months at sea for his project A Fish Called Julie. "The project, which goes on show at the Martin Parr Foundation, Bristol, next month, is part of We Feed the UK, a nationwide storytelling campaign by biocultural diversity organization the Gaia Foundation, tasking photographers and poets to raise awareness of sustainable food producers across soil, seed and sea," writes Finn Blythe.
- Sophie Wright interviews Toby Binder about his series #053kids of black-and-white portraits that explore "the intersecting struggles of poverty, belonging and identity faced by young people living on the margins of rich, industrial Germany." He explains, "The kids I photograph often don't know their parents' home country, nor do they feel accepted in Germany, so they use the digits 053 from the postcode of Duisburg-Hochfeld for identification instead."
- Thom Hogan identifies An Industry Problem with sensor supply. And, he points out, many new cameras are using old sensor designs, from 4 to 10 years old. "It doesn't help that CMOS image sensors have pretty much climbed the hill," he writes.
- Rob Haggart writes it's important to remember The Very Brief #MeToo Movement in Professional Photography. "Several big photographers were named in a couple of excellent articles in the Columbia Journalism Review by Kristen Chick and Vox by A.J. Chavar," he writes. "Do I think these people should be cancelled for their alleged creep-ass behavior that potentially ruined the careers of 30 women plus countless others who headed the other direction once the alarm sounded in their heads? YES."
- Ric Ford covers SSD Issues, linking to stories by David Harry, SomeTechGuy and Howard Oakley that uncover "some serious, hidden bottlenecks in certain scenarios."
- Joe Foley rounds up The Best AI Image Generators for turning text into images.
