In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Hoo Lee Gans, fill flash, Z Nikkors, Learning Light, medium format and old lenses.

  • Kristen Villalobos gets a great group shot of the Hoo Lee Gans (sounds like hooligans), Giants centerfielder Jung Hoo Lee's fan club with their hair on fire. When they do the wave, people call 911.
  • Derrick Story confesses, I Would Not Have Survived This Wedding Without Fill Flash. Especially since his wife was the officiant. He reports, "She said, 'I usually don't like pictures of myself, but you really made me look good.'"
  • Thom Hogan suggests Nikon Needs Z Nikkors. "Here's the dilemma: each new Nikkor lens needs to have a big enough market size potential to justify the R&D and production work for it," he writes.
  • Google's Learning Light is an AI "experiment" in learning lighting design.
  • Zach Sutton wonders, Is Medium Format Worth It? "Yes, of course, it is, but it entirely depends on your photography," he writes. The answer to these kinds of questions, of course, is always, "It depends."
  • In Ode to Old Lenses, Mike Johnston suggests shopping for bargain lenses instead of springing for those pre-orderable wonders that impoverish you. "It was a sorry day for me when I got the idea in mind that it's possible to get my money back out of things I put my money into," he writes. "Usually, you cannot."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
