In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at the funeral of Pope Francis, a TED talk, Michel Kharoubi, birding and nature photography.

  • Jim Powell curates 36 images of The Funeral of Pope Francis from Reuters, Getty, AFP and the Associated Press. The adds a few more intimate shots of those attending Pope Francis' Funeral.
  • Francis gave a TED talk in 2017 worth revisiting for its emphasize not "on time passing" but on "encounters" that struck us as the modus vivendi of photographers everywhere:

  • Grace Holliday spotlights The Beating Heart of the City, French photographer Michel Kharoubi's best phone picture, shot on an iPhone X. "The city is a set and passersby are both protagonists and extras," he says.
  • Photography Isn't About Photography, Mike Johnston is reminded when he takes Bob the bird photographer along to a Mennonite shop where he's having a shirt made and the seamstress turns out to be an avid birdwatcher. "It's about whatever there is out in the world that you are inspired to take pictures of," he writes.
  • In What the Rain Might Bring, Sophie Wright interviews Dylan Hausthor "about nature photography, finding inspiration in Medieval manuscripts and the fragile balance between hiding and revealing."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
