In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at May Day, Lagos negatives, travel tripods, point-and-shoot cameras, compartmentalizing, Apple tariffs and backup omissions.
- The Associated Press captures the action as Workers Observe May Day.
- Kate Mothes spotlights an artist-run archive that preserves Endangered Photographic Negatives in Lagos. "To date, the archive houses negatives saved from more than 20 studios, consisting of thousands of images," she writes.
- Light Stalking lists The 10 Best Travel Tripods of 2024. The piece lists seven factors to consider when purchasing.
- In The Best Point-And-Shoot Camera, Phil Ryan and Ben Keough recommend the Sony RX100 VII, Panasonic Lumix FZ80D, Ricoh GR III/IIIx and Fujifilm X100VI. "A great compact camera should have a relatively large sensor, be small enough for you to carry anywhere and allow you to capture images that would be impossible to replicate with your smartphone," they write.
- In Compartmentalizing (Update), Mike Johnston notes he was without power for 26 hours. "We put the bad experience in a box, stick it on the shelf and move on with our lives," he reflects on the experience. "And before we know it, apart from some general impressions which can seem quite superficial in retrospect, we hardly remember what's in the box."
- Rolfe Winkler reports Apple Says Most of Its Devices Shipped Into U.S. Will Be From India, Vietnam, "a move to allay investor concerns about the impact of tariffs on its operations."
- Howard Oakley details What Isn't Backed Up? by Time Machine and other backup utilities. Good to know.
