In this recurring column, we highlight a few items we've run across that don't merit a full story of their own but are interesting enough to bring to your attention. This time we look at Reuters' week, Isabel Mateos, Ugreen's smart tracker and a 16th St. alley.

  • Reuters showcases 19 Pictures of the Week from around the world, including an amusing Alcatraz gag photo and the best new Pope photo we've seen (the last one).
  • Associated Press photographer Isabel Mateos used solitude and light to capture The Intimacy of a Community Church. "After the death of Pope Francis, we wanted to illustrate the life of a deacon in Simojovel, someone who had dedicated himself to the church and to caring for his communities in the mountains of southern Mexico," she writes. "I felt it was important to capture the intimacy of the church, using the sunlight filtering through the doors, windows and wooden slats to reflect the quiet strength of both the setting and the worshipers' faith."
  • Ali Jennings reviews the $24 Ugreen Slim Smart Tracker that mimicks a credit card and requires charging only once a year. "The tracker has been designed primarily to sit in a wallet, but due to its shape and size, it's also ideal for slipping into a camera bag," Jennings writes.
  • Abigail Vân Neely, Lydia Chávez and Gustavo Hernandez have been staking out the action on a 16th St. Alley for two months, monitoring clean-up efforts by the police department. "While locals say the BART plazas have remained consistently cleaner, the ebbs and flows of one alley tell a different story," Vân Neely writes. "Two months of photos show that the street may be clear one hour or day, and filled with people another."

More to come! Meanwhile, here's a look back. And please support our efforts...
