A Chat With Joyce

12 February 2022

In the Old Days, you could call the hospital switchboard and they would connect you to the right room number where a phone would ring and the patient would complain a bit, turn over and then answer.

But these days patients bring their own phones, which are safely stored in a cabinet they can't reach until some nurse deigns to retrieve it for the patient. The phone and the charger, please.

Joyce managed to get her phone this morning but not the charger when she called. We had a nice chat.

She hadn't seen Dr. Tong, so I filled her in on my call with her surgeon after the surgery.

She isn't quite aware of what's going on in general, though. I had to tell her repeatedly that she has drips for an antibiotic and painkiller and a line for the Wound VAC. That's why she can't get out of bed unassisted.

But otherwise she sounded alert and happy to complain about the staff ("horrific") and the food ("terrible"). Which just goes to show what a good nurse and chef I've been over the last few months.

But, actually, the staff is very nice even if they can't answer all her questions and the food didn't sound that bad. She had soup, veggies, rack of lamb, an orange and a nutrition drink for dinner last night.

She sent most of it back though. And she sent most of her breakfast back too. And was about to order lunch when we said goodbye.

If you'd like to talk to her (it's you or the TV), you can reach her on her cell phone. And you should be able to figure how to find it on this site if you don't already know it.

Tell her I sent you.
