Sometimes, to steal a couple of words from the pages of the tattered songbook left open on a dusty piano, love hurts.
We like to tell ourselves it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. But we don't repeat that line. Once is quite enough.
And while that pain usually refers to romantic love, it's not exclusive to it. We would hazard to guess that's just the tip of the dagger.
Loves hurts.
The pain, though, twists as you age. What had been the embarrassments or humiliations of youth pales in comparison to the rejection later in life by those you nevertheless care about.
By then you have realized the object of the game isn't you at all. It's someone else. Anyone else.
And it just so happens that if that person is difficult, shall we say, they can help you master one of life's most challenging tasks.
